Cool Cat Case of the Month - August 2022

Mirabel was a young stray female cat taken in by our rescue partner Pet Promise in February of 2022. She was brought to us for a distended belly, getting larger by the day. We decided to X-ray Mirabel to see what was causing her large belly. What is your diagnosis?

 
That’s right – Mirabel was pregnant! How many babies do you see? It’s so hard to tell in that jumble of kitten bones! So when we are counting babies, we count things that each kitten will only have one of, such as skulls, spinal columns, or rib cages. If you guessed seven you’re right! About ten days after this X-ray was taken, Mirabel gave birth to seven healthy kittens.

Thanks to the devotion and wonderful care of the Pet Promise fosters, all seven kittens (named Antonio, Bruno, Camilo, Delores, Isabella, Louisa, and Pepa – who doesn’t love Encanto!) were cared for, blood tested for FeLV and FIV, fully vaccinated, spayed/neutered and adopted to carefully selected wonderful homes.
